PostSubject: Portal 2 Custom Maps   Sat Apr 30, 2011 1:08 am

The SDK for Portal 2 hasn't been released yet, but making maps is possible through Alien Swarm's SDK
Spoiler:

You dont have to buy anything extra to get that SDK since its free

Anyway, people have already started to make maps using it

You can get some from here:
http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?cat=5
http://myaperturelabs.com/viewfiles.php

Many of them are just test maps and proof of concept maps, but some are actual puzzles to be played

The decent ones are:
LabRatBeta: http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=325
Iterator: http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=323
Damagepy's Map: http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=330
Sequential: http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=336

I havent played some of the more recently released ones
They are all really short, and somewhat buggy since its not using the actual SDK

The official Portal 2 SDK release date will probably be in June (just an educated guess)
When the actual SDK is released we can expect to see alot of good custom content to come out

Valve is putting out DLC this summer
The DLC will include advanced test chambers for both SP and MP
And will have leaderboards
The DLC will be free

I forgot to say how to use these
Dl the file and put it in Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\portal 2\portal2\maps
All portal 2 maps go there

Start up portal 2 like normal

You need to enabled the dev console if you havent already, go to options, Keyboard/Mouse, and change Allow Developers Console to Enabled
You only need to do that once

Open the console with ` (the key to the left of the 1 key) and type map <map name> where <map name> is the file name of the map that you dled
As you type it will fill in the name for you so you really only need to know the first 3 or 4 letters of the map name

You dont need the SDK i was talking about in my last post to play custom maps
The SDK is only needed to make them

Heres a couple more custom maps that i played today that were pretty good

Synchronicity: http://myaperturelabs.com/file.php?id=563
This is probably the best custom map made so far, its made by the same guy that did Iterator, and actually includes that part in this map
Its well designed, medium difficulty and uses all but 1 of the puzzle mechanics that portal 2 has, including combining 2 that were never combined before
And hes still working on it

Gravity Trails: http://forums.thinkingwithportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=346
This one tries to add a new mechanic to the game, where gravity switches directions
Its very buggy and you can very easily get stuck, the whole thing loops around to the beginning of the map
The black arrows tell you what direction gravity is going
This doesnt actually change gravity, it uses world portals to make it seem like gravity is changing, which i though was pretty interesting

E3 Crusher map: http://myaperturelabs.com/file.php?id=564
This is a recreation of the map that Valve showed off in last years E3 trailers for Portal 2 but didnt include in the final game
